X and Y are forces, groups, or individuals in conflict. R is the resolution of the conflict relating X to Y.

If we drop a plumb-line from R through the triangle we have a line which can be called “the line the hero must walk!“. This ideal path between X and Y is the “rational set of actions” which would peacefully resolve the play’s conflict; if everyone took this line there would be no play.
